Shopify charges 1-2% fee for each transaction. If you liked Shopify consider BigCommerce. It has all the same functions but they do not ask for additional fee.
While talking about Magento there is now a solid alternative called PrestaShop 1.5. They made a lot of improvements and when they fix all the bugs it will be as powerful as Magento but much more user-friendly.

that is impressive to say the least! i cannot for the life of me find the same cross browser compliant animation effect for under 500k - considering i use jquery effects on most my sites this is exactly what i needed for an upcoming project. Nice work Scott

There's not even a question for me about this. Magento is always the answer. They are way better and offers more options and it does'nt cost anything. But your last thought kinda made sense when you said neither one is better than the other, they're just different.

Shopify is built on Ruby on Rails web application platform which runs on Ruby scripting language.
